Clothesline Project

Yaounde, June 17th -- Maya Initiatives and RENATA joined forces to host a Clothesline Project for the second time this year. The participants, all women, were asked to decorate either a handkerchief or a T-shirt with either words or images in a way that reflected their own personal experiences with sexual/domestic violence or a message that they wished to share with the community about the subject.

Below are a few images from the workshop:

T-shirt design by adding a few stitches.

This project is a great chance for young women
to reflect and respond proactively for the
betterment of their community.

June 17th was also the last day for our 5 month interns.
Thanks for all the hard work, girls!

Rape is a crime. Let's break the silence. Let's denounce rapists.

On March 14, 2011, Maya Initiatives hosted a meeting at Etoug-Ebe Baptist Church in Yaounde, Cameroon to discuss the issue of sexual violence against women.

Maya Intitiatives' Founder, Pochi Tamba Nsoh, lead the discussion and answered questions and comments throughout. The video, "No Means No," was also featured at the event.

The testimonies of two survivors of sexual violence and members of RENATA's National Network of Aunties Association stressed the importance of improving and maintaining strong and open relationships between mothers and daughters surrounding issues of sexual violence. A taboo in Cameroonian society, cases of rape often go unreported and untreated, posing detrimental problems for the victim, physically and psychologically.

Below are some pictures from the event. To see more, please visit out Flickr account.

Special thanks to Etoug-Ebe Baptist Church for allowing
us to use their meeting space!

Event participants gather around to receive further
information about MI's trainee programs and how to respond in
